Bringing Economics to the community through research, policy, and education.
We’re entering a pandemic of financial illiteracy.
Basic financial planning and knowledge is a necessity, not a luxury. Understanding how money works empowers people to make informed decisions, avoid debt traps, and build long-term stability. Everyday choices—saving, investing, budgeting—can turn into tools for independence and opportunity. However, 70% of U.S. adults report they never had financial education when they were growing up; 61% say they were never offered any financial education as youth.
Specifically, Economics as a subject carries a high barrier of entry within Norcal school districts. Until the final years of high school, such education is gatekept, and classes are often locked behind AP labels which carry hefty coursework and expensive fees.
Studies show that only 42% of lower-income households feel confident managing money, compared to 72% of higher-income families. Adults with low financial literacy are six times more likely to struggle to make ends meet and three times more likely to be trapped in debt.
We exist to change that.
Our nonprofit provides free, accessible financial education to underserved and low-income communities—teaching budgeting, credit management, and long-term planning. By equipping people with real financial skills, we aim to break cycles of hardship, build lasting stability, and give every family the opportunity to move upward.
Our solution.
Economics for Change is a student-led organization committed to driving positive change in our local schools and communities. We teach a curriculum created by our members that explores from the basics of micro and macroeconomics to the complicated multivariable calculus of Econometrics. Personal finance classes and business skills are also taught.
We partner with schools to educate young students while developing their passions. Outside of teaching, EFC maintains an academic blog that covers various papers/articles primarily focused on Economics. Other members conduct academic research and compete in competitions. By providing valuable volunteer and learning experience and opportunities, as well as investigating and exploring the intricacies of Economics, Finance, Business, and etc. EFC strives to push out policy amendments in our local governments through initiative.
Everything we provide is cost-free so that any student can take advantage of our offerings. The end goal is that through our mentoring, young students will develop skills to help them fulfill their aspirations.
